On The Leading Edge
One of the responsibilities we have in modern society is to push forward on the leading edge of thought. We make the world a better place by taking what has been given to us by our predecessors (family, culture, profession) and add to it with new creative thought and action. In this way, we hand over to the next generation something that they can make better, too.
Take our practices, for example. Does your orthodontic practice look today the way it did years ago? Does it look like it did when you bought it or started it? Like the saying goes, "This is not your father's practice". We've improved the look of practices. We've incorporated new techniques and new technologies. We've added services. We've made orthodontics better. And we will continue to do so.
So what grounding does a new graduate have to stand on in building his/her own practice? Certainly, their exposure to modern practice is limited during their education simply because of the school environment. When they get out, they get to see practices where the jobs are. These may be advanced practices or may be not. But we want to new generation of orthodontists to take the ball from what is best in us and make the profession better than we did. We want them to advance our work and take it to the next level.
The NJAO's new program "Visit Our Office", gives new grads and orthodontic residents a chance to see what's going on in "the real world". We get to invite them into our practice, shadow us for a day, and take away ideas and inspiration about what they want to create for themselves. And visiting just one practice is not enough. They should be able to see a variety of practices and pick the best ideas and bring them together to make a new, better, practice and advance the leading edge once again (and pass it on to the next generation as well).
For the program to work, though, we need you to sign up as a host. What effort does it really take? Fill out a form. Then have a chance to have good conversation to break up your day. Maybe even have a lunch buddy.
